Why Playfulness Matters
Welcome to our Sixth Newsletter!
In the face of uncertainty and change, playfulness might seem like a luxury — or even an unnecessary distraction.
Why Playfulness?
Research shows that bringing a sense of play into your life and work enhances creativity, reduces stress, and improves problem-solving skills.
Playfulness is not about ignoring challenges — it's about engaging with them in a way that keeps you open, curious, and resilient. Here's why playfulness can transform your professional and personal life:
-
Boosts Creativity. It shifts your brain out of rigid and habitual thinking into innovation. When you allow yourself to experiment and explore, you generate fresh ideas and solutions.
Example: A marketing team needs fresh ideas for a new campaign but feels stuck. Playful approach: Introduce a "Yes, and..." game inspired by improv theater. One person shares an idea, and the next person builds on it. No self-censorship, energy is high, and there are unexpected solutions. -
Lowers Stress and Anxiety. Laughter and play trigger the release of endorphins, reducing cortisol, the stress hormone. A playful mindset helps you navigate uncertainty with more ease and optimism.
Example: A team facing a tight deadline is overwhelmed, leading to tension and burnout. Playful approach: They implement a 5-minute "Power Reset," where everyone stands up, stretches, and shares a ridiculous workplace challenge — like writing an email with a non-dominant hand, doing a kind impersonation of a colleague, or sketching the boss as a superhero. The lighter mood makes it easier to tackle the project with fresh energy. -
Strengthens Problem-Solving Skills. Play helps reframe obstacles as puzzles rather than threats. Approaching challenges with curiosity inspires resourcefulness and adaptation.
Example: A project manager is struggling to improve team efficiency and morale but keeps hitting the same roadblocks. Playful approach: The team brainstorms, "How can we make this problem worse?" Once the team lists things like ignoring deadlines or keeping everything secret, they flip those ideas into constructive solutions, like clarifying deadlines and encouraging transparency. -
Enhances Connection and Collaboration. Bringing a lighthearted approach to work fosters stronger relationships and better teamwork because people feel safe to be themselves.
Example: Employees are separated into silos and don't understand each other's roles. Playful approach: For one afternoon, team members "swap roles" for a small task. Engineers draft press releases, marketers learn new software, and so on. Besides understanding more about what others do, future collaboration becomes smoother and more effective. -
Improves Resilience. Playfulness helps keep things in perspective. Failure is not seen as an endpoint — it is just part of the learning process.
Example: A startup team hesitates to take risks because they fear failure. Playful approach: Staff creates a "Failure Celebration Board," where team members post their "best" and "safe" mistakes of the week and what they learned. At the end of a set time period, the most creative failure gets a fun award. This reframing encourages resilience and innovation.
Awesome Success Discovered by Playfulness
Albert Einstein credited his breakthroughs in physics to a playful imagination, saying, "Play is the highest form of research."
Google created a 20% time policy where workers can dedicate a portion of their time to projects they are passionate about outside of their primary responsibilities. This led to major innovations like the creation of Gmail.
Lego was once on the brink of bankruptcy until it veered from focusing upon building blocks to the digitalization of pop culture. The Lego Star Wars set was the first of many successes.
How to Bring More Playfulness into Your Life
without sacrificing productivity
- Try a "What If" Exercise. Instead of feeling stuck, ask playful questions like, "What if we flipped this process upside down?" or "What's the most unconventional way to solve this?"
- Infuse Fun into Mundane Tasks. Turn routine work into a challenge or game. Think about how to do tasks differently and see what happens.
- Laugh More. Watch a short comedy video, read something funny, or find humor in daily interactions.
- Reconnect with What Used to Be Fun. What did you love doing as a kid? Doodling, dancing, building things? Try doing it again.
